Few tips to understanding sunscreens and the best ones to use

Hi everyone,

With us all being stuck in at the moment, the tendency to let that beauty routine slip is at an all-time high. The first for me is, that I completely took my sunscreen products out of my daily routine. My thought was that, if I’m not going outside then why do I need to use it?

Something then caught my attention online, you can get sun damage from the windows in your house! Well, this caused red flags for me. I’d not been using my sunscreen for a month! My mind was racing. The thought that I had been damaging my skin without even knowing about it terrified me. I know that this information might have been known by many but for me, I thought you only really needed to wear it when going outside, in particular when it is sunny but I was so wrong!

So let’s talk about facts:

Here is the reality, you have to use sunscreen/SPF every day. Come rain or shine that sunscreen has got to be on. This is all down to Ultraviolet Rays. The rays cause damage to your skin and can result in skin cancer. These rays never take a day off, even when it is cloudy so now you can’t neither. Ultraviolet rays can cause wrinkles, loss of firmness in your skin, dullness and uneven pigmentation. All sounds horrible, doesn’t it?

But don’t worry, even if you have never worn it before or you regularly forget to, it’s okay. When it comes to skincare it is never too late to start helping your skin and protecting it.

These days there are so many brilliant products out there that you are going to feel spoilt for choice. There are many that will make your skin feel amazing while protecting it. it is a win-win situation. This means a sticky white cast on your face is now a thing of the past.

When picking out a sunscreen you need to be thinking about these four main areas:

All sunscreens should be labelled like this. Meaning that the product will cover your skin against UVA and UVB rays. If it doesn’t have broad-spectrum don’t buy it, as it will not protect your face against UVA and UVB.

This means that the protection you have on your skin will work when in water for a specified amount of time.

Sun Protection Factor (SPF)

The protection factor is all about what level of protection is provided for your skin. For every day wear an SPF 15 or 30 is recommended.

Active Ingredients

It is worth noting when looking for a new sunscreen whether the active ingredients are chemical or physical. Physical sunscreens contain ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which provide your skin with a physical barrier that protects against UV rays. Physical sunscreens are the only ones that are considered safe to use. As mentioned before there are chemical sunscreens but my advice is to avoid them altogether and stick with physical active ingredients. Why go through the trouble of buying a sunscreen, applying it daily for it to not provide the correct protection for your skin.

Here’s my picks:
